Kumbhalgarh is a fortress situated in the Aravalli mountain ranges. This fort lies 350km away from Ahmedabad and 75km from Udaipur. Kumbhal was one of the most important forts in the Mewar kingdom second only to Chittorgarh. This fort had a continuous wall around the mount on which it was built. It was earlier a small fort during the beginning of Rajput dynasty known as Machindragarh. Later it was reconstructed into the present form and renamed as Kumbhalgarh by the then king of Mewar, Maharana Kumbha. The great Maha Rana Pratap, son of Maha Rana Uday was born inside this fort. But Pratap had to spend his childhood at Chittorgarh for his safety. This wonderful fort was conquered by an invader only once and that was by the Mughals.
This is why the also called it Ajay-durgam. Touirsts may vist the court in the afternoon and enjoy the amazing interiors and later watch a light and sound show at 7pm. There is a separate fee for entrance and the light show. Bike riders can easily reach here from Ahmedabad via Ranakpur-Kumbhalgarh route.
