Yercaud is a beautiful hill station in Salem district, Tamil Nadu. To reach Yercaud, one has to travel 32 km from Salem town driving through 20 hairpin bends. It is located in the Shevaroys range of hills. The main crops grown here are orange, coffee, lemon, jackfruits and pear. Yercaud is very famous for its oranges.
This enchanting place lies 1450 feet above sea-level. The highest point here is the Servaroyan hill where the famous Servaroyan Temple is situated. Yercaud is a well-known tourist spot and is known as Jewel of the South. The picturesque lake here is surrounded by woods. The Yercaud lake is situated at the heart of the city and hence the name jewel. The Shevaroy hills lie 5km away from the lake. The temple here is a historic cave temple. Historians have discovered stone artifacts from this ancient temple. Yercaud has a National Orchidarium and a Botanical garden maintained by southern circle of Botanical Survey of India. The other attractions here include Lady's Seat, Killiyur Falls, Bears Cave, Green House, Tipperary Colonial Bungalow, Pagoda Point, Karadiyur Viewpoint, Silk Farm and Rose Garden.
Yercaud enjoys a cool climate. Winters experience a temperature between 12°C - 24°C while in summer it is around 13°C to 29°C. Rainfall is 1100–1500 mm.
