Palais Garnier (known as Opera Garnier) is an opera house built during 1861 - 1875. Palais Garnier is one of the most famous opera houses and can seat 1,979 people. It took 14 years to complete the construction. This elegant opera house is named after its architect, Charles Garnier. Emperor Napoleon III who was the ruler of France at that time, wanted this to be the most beautiful opera house in the world. So, he conducted an architectural design competition in which 170 architects participated. Ultimately Charles Garnier’s design was selected for the new opera house. Therefore, the opera house when completed, turned out to be extra-ordinarily beautiful with a mind-blowing interior. When you enter the house after marvelling at the exterior beauty, you will be astounded by the luxurious interior. It has grand stairs, wide halls, expensive paintings by famous artists and breathtakingly beautiful chandeliers.  The auditorium can seat 1,979 who can enjoy the show at the same time. The huge stage accommodates as many as 450 artists. The central chandelier in the centre of the auditorium is a marvellous piece of art which weighs almost 7 tons.
