The Poonjar palace shares the same glory and pride of the Mathura Meenakshi Temple. This magnificent palace situated at Poonjar, can be reached from Kottayam via Pala-Erattupetta road. Poonjar palace is an example for the kind of lavish buildings in which the royal families lived in Kerala. The palace is mainly built of wood. The palace has a temple similar to the famous Meenakshi Temple near it.  It also has a museum that houses the royal collection of antiques, military equipment, rock-cut lamps, palanquin, ‘enna thoni’ a vessel carved out of a single wood used for Ayurvedic treatment, bronze lamps, jewellery boxes and so on.
