A 1km walk through the forest from the Kakkayam Dam, will bring you to the origin of Urakkuzhi waterfalls. The water plunges from a tall rock into the basin forming small pits like those seen in a mortar. This is how the waterfall gets its name.  The trekking through the forest is an unforgettable adventure. There are wild animals seen everywhere and at some places you cannot see the sky due to the tall overgrown trees that block the sunlight. Everywhere you see footprints of animals especially elephants trampling through the bush. Though the path goes steeply down, it is relatively easy to walk because the path is paved with rocks. Since the waterfall is deep inside the forest, the atmosphere looks murk even during afternoons. There are two brooks that rush towards the rock and join before they plunge together into the deep basin.
The sight from the top of the waterfall is exciting as well as scary. The rain accompanied by the sound of roaring water flowing down and the sight of the deep valley from the hanging bridge gives a thrilling shiver to the viewer. Earlier there was a basket boat safari in the Neeratkayal close to the waterfall. This is a place where animals including elephants come down the rocks to have fun in the water.
