The Shenduruney forest was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1984 after the commissioning of the Thenmala Dam. Shenduruney is a tropical ever-green forest, spread over a terrain of 172sq.km surrounding the Thenmala dam. This is one of the few evergreen forests situated in the Western Ghats. The major tributaries to the Thenmala dam include Parappar, Kulathupuzhayar and Umayar. Situated in Kollam district, Thenmala dam is the major contributory for drinking water in the district. Shenduruney comes under the Adathyamala Bio-reserve region. It is the habit of many animals such as elephants, tiger, leopard, bear, wolves, porcupine, deer, monkey, lion-tailed macaque and so on. It is also the habitat of many birds and reptiles found only in the Western Ghats.
