Pamban Island is a part of Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu. The railway bridge that connects the island to the main land is known as the Pamban bridge. Although there is a parallel bridge for vehicles , it is the railway bridge which is popularly known as Pamban bridge. This railway bridge was built decades before the other bridge. The century old Pamban bridge is one of the engineering marvels in India. This bridge has been adjusted as the longest unique railway bridge in the world. This iron bridge is 2345km long, built on support of 145 pillars. Earlier it was a meter-gauge rail but now it has been upgraded as broad-gauge railway line. This bridge has a double-leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships pass through. Built across the Palk bay between main land of Ramanathapuram and Pamban Island, this railway bridge was used for meter gauge trains to pass through. But as a part of railway expansion, it is being renovated.
