Chitradurga fort was built in the 15th Century A.D. This fort is also known as Chitrakal Durga fort which literally means paintings adorned fort in Kannada. The fort was built in many stages during the reign of the dynasties of including the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas and the Nayakas. The fort was taken over by the Vijayanagar kings who strengthened this fort and made it indestructible. The fort remained with the Nayakas for almost 200 years. All the important parts of the fort were built by Baramappanayaka, who ruled here from AD 1689 to 1722. This fort was built in such a way that enemies of the state could not easily access the region. The fort has many paths that bent and twist all the way, wonderful tunnels, caves which pass through hills. The fort has 19 gateways in the front and 38 posterior gateways.  The greenish water reservoir inside the fort is an example for brilliant architectural skills. This amazing reservoir can hold water for almost 10-12 years and never dries up even if doesn’t rain for years. Each and every construction inside the fort amazes the visitors. It is almost impossible to see the fort completely in a single day because this magnificent fort is spread over an area of 8km. A visit to the Chitradurga fort is going to excite those who like adventure, history and photography.
