Junagadh in Gujarat has an eventful history from the bygone era of Emperor Ashoka to the freedom movement and the merger of smaller kingdom to form present India. Let’s have a look at the tourist centres in Junagadh.
Girnar Hills
Girnar, also known as the city of hills is the most popular tourist attraction here. The Girnar hills have more than 800 steps to climb. As you climb these stairs you can see many ancient temples on the way. The last phase of the steps is steep and difficult to climb. It takes almost 5 hours to reach the top of the hill.
Sakkarbaug Zoo
This zoo established in the year 1863, is one of the oldest zoos in India. Those who are unable to visit the Gir forest or those who have to come back disappointed without seeing the lions can come here to see them. The zoo has many animals including tigers, leopards, ostrich and snakes. The Sakkarbaug zoo is so large that you will have to go by bus to reach the other end of it. This zoo also provides plan breeding of endangered wild animals and wild life health care.
Uperkot
The fort here is at least 2500 years old and is situated in the heart of the city. This fort was constructed during the Mauryan Dynasty. This fort is an example of India’s rich heritage and architectural skills. Many battles were fought here and it had to be renewed several times.
Adi-Kadi Vav
Although this is a well, it’s not an ordinary kind we see. It is a step-well where hundreds of steps were constructed to climb down. The well is 100 feet deep and scary. Another step-well in Junagadh is the Navghan Kuwo which is almost a 100 years old. The steps go spiral around the well climbing down to the water-level. These two wells had provided all the water needed for the Uperkot. Junagadh has a prominent place in the history of Gujarat.
