Soaked in the orange and golden hues of the sun setting in the west, the Banasura valley looks spectacular with its magnificent hill ranges and beautiful waterbody with small mounts here and there. The Banasura resort is situated on the banks of Kabini River, behind the dam. The Banasura Sagar dam is built across Karamamathodu, a tributary of Kabini River. This dam was constructed in the year 1979. This place is in Padinjarathara, a village in the western Ghats, 22km away from Kalpatta in Wayanad district. It is the largest earthen dam in India and also the second largest one in Asia. When the land in the reservoir area was flooded, a few tiny islands were formed in the valleys of Banasura Hills. These picturesque islands are a major tourist destinations in Wayanad. The project was designed to generate electricity and provide water for drinking and irrigational purpose. This place is a boon for wild animals who depend on the water here during summer season. Trekking facilities are also available to climb the steep beautiful hills. The resort is the best place to begin your trekking adventure. The visitors here are mostly foreigners. Permission from the KSEB is a must to climb the hills from the resort.
